What is Medi-Cal? Medi-Cal is the State of California’s version of the Federal Medicaid program. Medi-Cal pays for “medically necessary” health care services, including physician visits, adult day health service, some dental care, ambulance services, some home health, X-ray and laboratory costs, orthopedic devices, eyeglasses, hearing aids, some medical equipment, some prescriptions, etc.
Most importantly for seniors, nursing home care is also covered. If the individual qualifies for Medi-Cal, s/he does not need private “medigap” or HMO insurance to pay for costs, though if such insurance is carried, the premiums are deducted from income when computing the share of cost, and therefore costs the beneficiary nothing.
Some important points:
- Eligibility: If your medical expenses exceed your income, then you are eligible for Medi-Cal.Obtaining Medi-Cal benefits to pay the expenses of a loved one’s long term care needs is a three-stage process. These steps include Eligibility, Qualification, and the Application Process.
- Qualification: Regardless of how much you may have, Desert Elder Law can help qualify you for Medi-Cal while also protecting most, if not all of your assets.
- The Application: Because the Medi-Cal application process is detailed and complex, and because errors can result in either a denial of benefits or a costly delay, Desert Elder Law will prepare and submit the Medi-Cal application on your behalf.
